Maison Dorcas is a development project created in 1995 to provide employment and training in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. For most of the artisans, this is their first job. They learn to be disciplined and reliable at their work, and realize that they are capable and intelligent.
The women learn sewing, crafts, and small business management skills. They are encouraged to manage their part of the production process, and to come up with ideas for new products and for improving current products. Some of their products include home décor, bags and stuffed animals.
Some of the women have participated in math and literacy classes, and some have learned to use the computer and do accounting. The women now believe in themselves and feel confident in their work. They are able to provide their families with a better life and feel proud of their work.
